10 meaningful activities for adults to celebrate Holy Week

Holy Week is a time for remembrance, devotion, & joy. It is a time to remember the sacrifice that was made for us by Jesus, & to spend time meditating prayerfully on that fact. It is supposed to be a special, sacred time, but in all the business of life, it’s easy to become distracted & forgetful. It’s easy to treat this time like it’s just any other week.

I am definitely guilty of forgetting the meaning of Holy Week. With work, tasks to be done, & a never-ending to-do list, my mind is always focused on other things. It can be difficult to find just a few minutes to just sit & spend time with God. Unfortunately, what should be my priority often feels like something I squeeze into whatever little time I have left.

I wanted this Holy Week to be different. Since January, with United Church, I have been participating in our church-wide challenge of reading the Bible in a year. It is something I have done in the past, but it was always by myself. I am finding such profound joy & value in doing this with other people, & I suppose it was this that pressed on my heart to become more mindful about this year’s Holy Week. Spending so much time in God’s word has reminded me just how much rest I find in it, & how much good it does in my life.

So, if you’re looking for just a couple of ways to incorporate more time with God into the busyness of your everyday life during Holy Week (because, let’s be honest – the world, unfortunately, does not pause for us to celebrate this sacred time), check out the activities below!

1. Walk with Jesus Daily Easter Text

Photo by Rahul Chakraborty on Unsplash

This is such an easy way to stay in the mindset of Holy Week, & you don’t even have to do anything! Every year, I sign up for 95.1 Shine FM’s Walk with Jesus. Throughout the week, the radio station sends me texts about what was happening in the Easter story at the day & time it happened. Every time I get a text message, I prayerfully remember the season we are in. It always hits me like a gut punch when I get the text that Jesus just died in the middle of my Friday afternoon. It really helps to keep me in the right mindset while I am going about my daily life.

To sign up, text the word “EASTER” to 88474. You can learn more about the Walk with Jesus & 95.1 Shine FM here.

2. Do a daily devotional

Photo by Kelly Sikkema on Unsplash

There are tons of Holy Week devotionals on The Bible App that have quick readings for every day of the week. Read it first thing when you wake up in the morning, during your lunch break, or right before you go to sleep at night. The app even has an audio option, so you can listen to the devotional & Bible verses like a podcast during your commute or workout.

3. Wash each other’s feet on Holy Thursday

Photo by Rune Enstad on Unsplash

This one may sound a little strange at first, but this a great way to show humility & God’s love to one another. Washing your family member’s feet can be a way to remember what Jesus did for His disciples during their last meal together, & to remind ourselves that we are supposed to be servants of God & to each other.

4. Eat a Passover meal

Photo by Lefteris kallergis on Unsplash

If the foot washing isn’t quite what you are looking for, why not make a traditional Jewish passover meal on Holy Thursday. Make lamb & unleavened bread, & serve it with wine or grape juice for a kid-friendly option. You can find lots of recipes for a Seder meal online. And, you can even read about The Last Supper with your family during dinner to remember why we celebrate this day.

5. Fast on Good Friday

Photo by Alla Hetman on Unsplash

On the day of Jesus’ crucifixion, you can prayerfully remember his death on the cross by fasting for a day. Remember, fasting doesn’t necessarily mean you have to skip eating altogether. You can eat just light foods, or try fasting from something other than food, such as social media or another worldly distraction so you can spend more time focusing on prayer.

6. Listen exclusively to Christian music

Me listening to music. Have you ever made a soundtrack for your life? Check out how to make one & the one that I made here.

I listen to music throughout my day just for a little background ambience. If you do this, too, why not switch it up this week & listen exclusively to Christian music? It’s a great way to help you stay in the right mindset without having to add anything to your daily routine.

7. Spring cleaning

Hear me out on this one. Jesus came & cleansed us of our sins. Why not cleanse your environment for spring to welcome this new beginning? You can also spend some time going through your belongings to donate anything you no longer need.

8. Volunteer

Photo by Joel Muniz on Unsplash

If you have some time on Saturday, why not spend it volunteering somewhere? Just as Jesus served & sacrificed of himself for us, we are called to do the same for others. If you aren’t able to get out because of COVID-19, there are plenty of ways to volunteer virtually as well. Check out VolunteerMatch.org for lots of ways to volunteer, in-person & virtually, in your area.

9. Give away Easter goodies

Photo by Jennifer Burk on Unsplash

Fill Easter eggs with candy & leave them in a basket on a neighbor’s doorstep, or make fresh baked goodies to share. This can be a great way to share a “meal” with others in a COVID-19 friendly way.

10. Celebrate Easter

Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash

Whatever your favorite Easter tradition is, make time for it & a little extra time for God this Easter holiday. Remember the meaning of the day, spend it with loved ones if you can, & remember just how profoundly loved you are.

Happy Easter everyone! I hope you all have a wonderful Holy Week & a fantastic holiday.

What’s your favorite way to celebrate Holy Week? Tell me about it in the comments below!

10 seasonal ways to practice self-care this spring

Note: This post does contain affiliate links. If you buy a product after clicking a link, I may earn a commission off of that purchase.

Self-care is important any time of year, but spring is the perfect season to take a little extra time for yourself. While the world is waking from its slumber & committing itself to new growth once again, you can do the same

Spending some time to engage in self-care looks different for everyone. It’s important to match the type of self-care you use with what is actually beneficial & meaningful to you. A bubble bath can be a great way to relax, but if you don’t have a comfortable place to soak, your muscles don’t need to relax, or, even worse, if you don’t even like soaking in baths, this may not be the best way to engage in self-care for you. I find it interesting when people force themselves to do self-care, & they choose an activity that they don’t enjoy & get it done like just any other task on their to-do list. Self-care should be something that you need & that brings relief & relaxation to your life in some way. This means that sometimes it is indulgent, like eating chocolate or bingeing on your favorite Netflix show, but sometimes its actually less glamorous, like cleaning out your closet or spending a day getting all the things done that never make it onto your to-do list. No matter what, at the end of your activity, you should feel some sort of relief & feel better about your current state in life.

With that being said, I love to theme my activities to the season I am in, personally & in the world. Spring is a perfect time for self-care because there are so many things you can do! Listed below are 10 ways you can engage in self-care this spring. As stated above, make sure you choose one that is meaningful to you, & enjoy your self-care time! You deserve it.

1. Go for a walk

Me walking on some railroad tracks in Missouri

The weather has finally gotten warmer, which means it is the perfect time to go for a relaxed walk outdoors & enjoy some fresh air. If you are looking to get your heart & adrenaline pumping a little more, go for a run or bike ride. The clean air & physical activity are good for your mental & physical health.

2. Do some spring cleaning

The time for spring cleaning is here, but this doesn’t have to be treated like just another annoying task you have to complete. Making your environment clean & orderly is beneficial for your mental health. A cluttered space encourages a cluttered mind. Take some time to purge your house of things you no longer need, & then take some time to clean up & maybe even decorate your environment in a new way that brings you joy, not just for the day, but for months to come.

3. Make a healthy meal with ingredients from the farmer’s market

Me & Joseph buying ingredients from the farmer’s market the day he proposed

Healthy food nourishes our body & helps us feel our best. Why not support a local farmer’s market & take some time for yourself by making a gourmet meal with all fresh ingredients? It’s a fun activity, & a healthy way to take to nourish your body.

4. Plan a day-trip

Joseph & me on Strasburg Rail Road in Pennsylvania during our day trip – watch Joseph’s vlog about the trip here

Now that the weather is warmer, it is the perfect time to go for a trip. Plan your itinerary for little getaway in your local tourist spot, or make it more spontaneous & just walk around the area to see what attracts you most. You can do it alone for some quality time with you, or go with your family or a friend for some much-needed social time.

5. Start a new skincare routine

Me using my new Aceology ice globe facial massagers from my Be Kind by Ellen spring subscription box

If you’re anything like me, your skin is feeling a little dry & pale after a long, cold winter. Try out a new skincare routine to help moisturize your cracked skin & give it a fresh glow for the new season.

6. Plant a garden

My brother, Jake, & me collecting the produce from our garden my junior year of high school

It’s good for you, & its good for the environment, too. Spend some time getting in some physical activity by planting a garden, & then reap the benefits for months to come with the fresh, healthy & delicious produce you harvest. Or, plant a flower garden & let the bright colors & lovely scents bring you joy every day.

7. Buy yourself flowers

The beautiful yellow roses Joseph gave me for Valentine’s Day

If you aren’t into gardening, bring spring into your home by buying yourself some fresh flowers. Put them in a lovely vase on your table or wherever you will see them to brighten your space. A little touch of spring indoors is a great way to celebrate the season & show yourself some love.

8. Diffuse spring-themed essential oils

Photo by Jaron Whelan on Unsplash

Bring the lovely smells of spring into your home by diffusing spring-themed essential oils, such as lemongrass, lavender, eucalyptus, & citrus scents like lemon & tangerine. Diffusing essential oils can help reduce stress, & different essential oils have additional benefits, such as using lavender to help reduce insomnia or peppermint to relieve headaches.

9. Make a batch of fruit-infused water

Photo by Julia Zolotova on Unsplash

Fresh fruits are in abundance, which means it’s the perfect time to make fruit-infused water. If you are terrible at drinking your daily intake of water, or if you just want to switch up the flavor a little bit, try chopping up fresh fruit & putting it in a pitcher of water to infuse. It is a delicious way to hydrate our bodies, which helps our body systems to work as they are supposed to, as well as brightens our skin, gives us more energy, & improves our mood.

10. Start a new hobby

My new favorite crafting hobby is paper crafts with Washi Tape! This is the valentine I made Joseph this year

Spring is the time of new beginnings, so why not try something new? If you want to do something healthy for your body, try a new exercise routine or start cooking more healthy meals at home. If you’re just looking to engage your mind in a new way, why not try a new craft or start doing crossword puzzles. Whatever appeals to you or whatever you have been wanting to try, this is the perfect time to start doing it.

I hope you found a new self-care activity that excites you. Try to give yourself a little time each day, even if it’s just a few minutes, to give yourself a little extra love & care. Your body, mind & soul will thank you.

10 fun socially distanced activities to do this spring

Joseph’s & my first spring run this year – it was a beautiful, sunny run after a long winter training

Note: This post contains affiliate links. If you buy a product after clicking a link, I may earn a commission off of that purchase.

Springtime is finally here! The warm weather has arrived, & I am ready to get outside & enjoy it.

While COVID-19 regulations are lifting in a lot of states, there are still plenty of states with restrictions on people we can see & where we can go. However, there are still plenty of fun things to do, even if you can’t go to see your favorite ballgame or have a backyard BBQ. Check out the list below for 10 socially-distanced but still enjoyable activities to celebrate this beautiful season.

1. Have a picnic in a park

Me sitting with Joseph’s & my picnic dinner the night he proposed

Go alone with a book, or bring your family along for a lovely picnic in the park, complete with a basket & blanket. Pack sandwiches & yummy, portable snacks like trail mix & baby carrots. It’s a relaxing & fun way to enjoy a beautiful, sunny day. And if you go to a nature park, you can also go for a hike before or after eating.

2. Plant a garden

My brother, Jake, & me gathering the produce from our garden my junior year in high school

Spring is the time to plant gardens so you can enjoy the beautiful flowers all season, or get some fresh produce in the summer. Spend some time out in the sun tending to your garden. It can be good for your mental health, as well as your physical health, to get your hands a little dirty outside.

3. Go for a bike ride

Photo by Danny Lines on Unsplash

This is another activity that’s good for your mental as well as your physical health. Winter can be a tough time to go bike riding: Your legs will be warm, but your stationary upper body only heats up so much, & the breeze from the ride can cause an unbearable chill on your fingers. But spring is the perfect time to go out & enjoy the beautiful scenery from the perch on your bicycle. Go for a ride in a park, or, if you live close by, ride your bike to work. That way, you can do some good for the environment, too.

4. Go kayaking

Me kayaking at Edin Mill

This is another easily socially distanced activity that’s good for your mental & physical health. Spending some time floating downstream, enjoying nature, can be very relaxing, & believe me, your arm muscles are going to feel it later after you try to fight against that current for a few hours.

5. Visit a farmer’s market

Joseph & me buying ingredients from the farmer’s market for our picnic dinner the night he proposed

Delicious spring produce is in abundance at farmer’s markets this time of year. Why not get some fresh ingredients & make a challenging, fancy recipe at home? Or, go to the market for inspiration & challenge someone in your house to a cook-off. The chef of the best dish gets to pick what’s for dessert!

6. Do some yoga outside

Me doing yoga on a pier in Solomons Island, MD

If you’ve never taken your mat out of your living room, now is the time to do it. It’s not so hot that it makes your yoga mat feel rubbery, but it’s also not so cold that you need to try to do Downward Dog bundled up in an oversized coat. Enjoy the feeling of doing a Sun Salutation with the warm sun on your skin, & look up at the fluffy clouds while you lie back during Savasana. It’s a relaxing, rejuvenating experience that just can’t compare to a traditional, indoor yoga class.

7. Make a spring-themed playlist

Have you ever created a soundtrack for you life? Find out how & check out my soundtrack here

I have already started my playlist, & I can’t wait to share it at the end of the season. If you’re a music lover like me, save all the songs that remind you of spring to a Spotify playlist, or just save all the new releases songs you can’t stop listening to this season. It will be a fun way to look back in the future & remember all of your lovely, springtime memories. There’s nothing like a special song that takes us back in time to a moment we always want to remember.

8. Make a bird feeder

Photo by Hanna Balan on Unsplash

I love hearing birds twittering in the trees. Why not bring that lovely sound to your yard every morning by hanging up a bird feeder? You can make it even more fun by making your own. There is a lot of inspiration on Pinterest. It feels even more rewarding to make something with your own hands (even if you’re as inept at handiwork as me & you make bird feeders out of pinecones & peanut butter), & it is so pleasant to listen to & watch the birds while you sip your morning coffee on your porch.

9. Have a bonfire

Photo by Mahad Aamir on Unsplash

Get some marshmallows, graham crackers & chocolate because it’s s’more time! Have a small cookout with your family, or just make some delicious treats for yourself & watch the flames dance beneath the stars. It’s a relaxing way to enjoy an evening, or a fun way to spend time with your family & tell ghost stories.

10. Have an outdoor movie night

Photo by Georgia Vagim on Unsplash

If bonfires aren’t your thing, how about an outdoor movie night? You don’t need a movie theater for an immersive, film-screening experience. Set up a projector & sheet, pop some popcorn & grab your favorite snacks, & gather with your family outside with some warm blankets to enjoy your favorite movie.

I hope you found an activity that inspired you to have some fun this spring! The coronavirus pandemic may have made some activities less accessible, but there’s no reason why we still can’t enjoy this lovely season.

10 reasons why I feel lucky this St. Patrick’s Day

Joseph & me in our St. Paddy’s Half Marathon shirts & medal

May your troubles be less, your blessings be more. And nothing but happiness come through your door.

Irish Blessing

Call it luck or call it blessings, I feel very fortunate this St. Patrick’s Day.

Just over a year ago, on March 5, Governor Larry Hogan announced a state of emergency in Maryland due to the coronavirus pandemic. The year since then has been difficult for many, but on this St. Patrick’s Day, I can’t help but think just how grateful I am for the many lovely things this year has blessed me with.

If you’re feeling a little unlucky today, I invite you to read on & ponder the little blessings in your life that may have gone overlooked. There is plenty of negativity in life to dwell on, but I find that when I focus on the positive & practice gratitude, my life only continues to brighten.

1. My engagement to the love of my life

The proposal – photo by Jon Mauler Photography

I just had to start with this blessing. I could not be more grateful for the man that swept me off my feet nearly two years ago & has not put me down since. I feel so fortunate to have found someone who makes me feel so loved & that I find pure joy in loving. I cannot wait to marry him this August.

2. My supportive family & friends

Me & my family on Christmas Eve 2020

This blessing goes without saying as well. I am very fortunate to have a loving & giving support system. I truly enjoy spending time with my family & friends, & I cannot wait to see more of these amazing people once I am fully vaccinated.

3. My work

My desk on my first day at work at Hunt Valley Church – they surprised me with some cute office supplies & some of my favorite snacks!

At the beginning of the pandemic, my small business, like many others, struggled. I went months without making much of an income. I am so grateful to have found work, & even more thankful that I have been able to keep my business, which is my true passion, alive. I know I am very fortunate to have found employment when so many are still struggling, so this is a blessing that I never take for granted.

4. My health

Me at the doctor’s office

This is a big one for me. During the COVID-19 pandemic, my own health struggled for different reasons. I have struggled with chronic illness since the age of 10, & it seemed to get worse just as the pandemic was taking hold. I am so grateful for the support of my loved ones who helped me get through it, & I am grateful for my strong body that fought to get me to where I am now. I feel truly blessed to be where I am now, & that neither my loved ones nor I have been sick with COVID-19. I know we are some of the lucky ones.

5. My faith & church community

My baptism at United Church – this happened just weeks before the stay-at-home order began

When times get hard, I feel like people often turn from or turn to God. I am so very grateful that my faith has carried me through the last year, & despite the pandemic making it difficult to meet in-person, my church family has continued to grow stronger. At United, we have begun to hold services in person, but online, streamed versions are still available, & I meet weekly with my Bible study group on Zoom. It has been a way to stay connected to a supportive & loving community of people, to delve deeper into my relationship with God, & to stay strong in my faith during a very difficult year.

6. Technology

My desk at home

Never have I been more grateful for technology than during the past year. Working from home, online classes, & endless Zoom meetings can get old, but they are truly such a blessing. I cannot imagine what we would have done without these socially distanced options. Thanks to the technology we have today, I have been able to have a job, Joseph has been able to pursue his Master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling, & I have been able to stay connected with friends & family that I otherwise would not have been able to see. It is nowhere near the same as being able to meet in-person, but I am truly grateful for the opportunities technology has given us to stay connected during this lonely time.

7. Healthcare workers

Me & Joseph with his sister-in-law, Becca, & brother, Jon – Becca is a nurse at [hospital], & I am so grateful for what she does

I cannot even begin to thank healthcare workers enough. I cannot imagine the stress, the exhaustion, & the devastation these dedicated & hard-working people must have seen & experienced. To this day, these men & women are still on the front lines, fighting this invisible enemy. I am truly humbled by their selfless care.

8. The Simple Joys

For Valentine’s Day, I made Red Velvet Mochas – you can find the recipe here

I was blessed with a few amazing trips this past year, & a joyous wedding occasion to look forward to this year, but for the most part, 2020 was a year without much to look forward to. However, I began to find such joy in the little things. Instead of rushing out the door with a coffee in hand, I have learned to slow down & enjoy my first few sips, to savor the flavor & the feeling of the warm mug in my hands. I am learning to take notice to the warmth of the sun on my skin, to listen to the birds chirping in the trees, & to stop & take notice to the changing seasons. I am enjoying the simple joys in my life that I normally would have overlooked in the busyness of life, & they have made the last year of my life truly beautiful

9. Good Conversations

Me at my job at Charm City Run in September chatting with the Training Program Director, Kelly Maurer

There wasn’t a lot of doing in the last year, but there was a whole lot of talking, & I really enjoyed it. A lot of deep & meaningful conversations came out of the last year, & I felt like I had the chance to get to know people in a new way. Topics we never would have talked about & questions we probably never would have asked were finally ventured because there was nothing else to do. I enjoyed getting to know the people in my life better, & I feel like, despite the distance, many of my relationships actually grew stronger.

10. The vaccine

There is always a light at the end of the tunnel, & I feel like we can finally see it. The vaccine is here. I received my first dose this past week! There still may be months ahead of us, but I feel like I can finally see an end in sight, & I cannot wait to step outside, mask-free, into the new world that will come out of it. Until then, however, I will patiently wait, enjoying all of the many blessings I have, even in this moment, to be grateful for.

Be Kind by Ellen Spring 2021 review: Be kind to your body & the earth

Watch my unboxing video on my new YouTube channel

Note: This article does contain affiliate links. If you buy a product after clicking a link, I may earn a commission off of that purchase.

Sustainable living is simple, fun, & fashionable thanks to the Be Kind by Ellen subscription box.

Ellen DeGeneres was my childhood hero. I loved her mission of sharing kindness with the world through our gifts. Her way of sharing that kindness was through comedy & her philanthropy. She inspired me to always think about ways that I could use my own passions, such as writing & running, to help the world around me.

Ellen’s Be Kind box is a fantastic way to take care of yourself & the world around you. When I saw the advertisement online, I could not resist purchasing my own subscription that night. Every season, a new box filled with socially-conscious products are released. Every item in the box makes a positive impact in the world, whether it be for the environment or for another important cause, such as women’s health. And all of the items will help you feel better about yourself, too. It’s an opportunity to treat yourself with something special, & to feel good about it because you’re helping the world around you as well.

A different box is delivered each season of the year, & each box costs $54.99, but the items inside add up to over a $200 value! When you sign up for an annual subscription, you save 10% off of all four boxes. I personally signed up for the annual subscription, & now that I have received my first box, I could not be happier that I did.

I received my first box last week (watch the unboxing video here!), & after a week of using these products, I can confidently say that I adore each & every one of them. They each fit seamlessly into my lifestyle but help me to take better care of myself, & I feel good about using each of them because I know they are helping the world in some way.

The Spring Box was themed around the idea of setting new intentions for the year. Now is the time to think about the causes that mean the most to us, & setting positive intentions of how we can contribute meaningfully to them. It is the time to think about what things most touch our hearts & convict us to act, & then set up for our life the tenets, & the actions behind them, that will aid us in helping those movements grow & make a meaningful difference in our world.

The Be Kind by Ellen Spring Box was dedicated to giving back to brands that are doing their part to help our planet, & the creatures that call it home, to thrive. Keep reading to learn more about these amazing brands & the products they have created that have now become a part of my regular routine.

SAMARA Shoulder Bag

SAMARA is committed to making luxury fashion items that are both simple & elegant from vegan sources. All of SAMARA’s products are eco-friendly & affordable, so everyone can enjoy being fashionable while helping the planet. And SAMARA’s products are as eye-appealing as they are innovative – this brand is leading the way in the use of apple-based leather & recycled ocean plastics to create their products. My favorite part of this brand is that they are committed to giving back to the community as well. The Soular Backpack is an initiative founded by SAMARA CEO Salima Visram. This initiative provides solar light to students in East Africa, which eliminates the need for kerosene lamps that emit harmful & dangerous fumes, as well as helps students to study safely at home.

Personally, I love this bag. I don’t normally use a purse; I have always been more of a backpack lover. But sometimes I need something a little more fashionable & small for an afternoon or evening out, & this bag is perfect for that. It’s simple but elegant, a fashionable choice that carries everything I need without being overly bulky or attract too much attention. And, of course, I can feel good about using it, because I know it is made from sustainable materials & is helping the world in more ways than one.

The SAMARA shoulder bag in the Be Kind by Ellen box was designed exclusively for this subscription. However, you can find a similar bag in a range of available in four different colors here.

Alt Linen Kitchen Towel Set

I have always wanted to switch to reusable, cotton towels. They are better for the environment, & they have to be more cost-effective. The initial investment is more expensive, but after years of buying endless rolls of paper towels, I know I would have spent less if I had just bought a set of reusable linens. The problem is, they get dirty, & as terrible as it sounds, I didn’t feel like dealing with that. I felt like they would get stained to the point that I would not be able to get them clean in the wash (I have seen my paper towels after I use them, & I am often grateful I am just going to throw them away rather than try to wash them). No one wants to use a stained towel – as privileged as it may sound, it just feels dirty, even after it’s been in the wash. I like the feeling of a clean towel to dry my hands.

Alt Linen is the solution to all of my problems. They have created beautiful, white, reusable cotton towels & napkins to replace paper products. The best part is that you only pay for them once, & then you can replace them for free when they are worn! That’s right: You can send your used linens back to Alt Linen, & they will send you new ones for free. All you have to do is pay for shipping. There is now no reason not to use reusable kitchen towels. It’s more cost-effective, beneficial for the environment, &, thanks to Alt Linen, it’s actually more convenient, too.

You can purchase your own set of Alt Linen towels here.

Fill it Forward Water Bottle & Refill Tracking Stickers

Fill it Forward has created an entire community committed to making the world a better place just by drinking their water! With the Fill it Forward app, you can contribute to meaningful causes with every bottle of water you drink. Here’s how it works: You put a refill tracker sticker on your reusable water bottle. Then, every time you refill your water bottle, you scan the sticker with the app. According to the Fill it Forward website, with each scan, funding is donated to charitable partners that “specialize in creating sustainable solutions that help bring clean water & nutritious food to people in need.”

And the sticker does good for you, too! By scanning the sticker every time you refill your water bottle, you can keep track of how much water you are drinking, which can help you to stay hydrated

The Be Kind by Ellen box came with the sticker & a lightweight, leak-proof reusable water bottle. Eliminating plastic water bottles also helps the environment, so this product is good for the world in so many ways. The Be Kind by Ellen Fill it Forward water bottle has positive affirmations written on it, so it’s good for your mental as well as your physical health. I love drinking my water while I repeat the mantras to myself. It helps my body to feel better, & it rejuvenates my mind as well so I’m ready to take on the rest of my day.

Aceology Ice Globe Facial Massagers

I am not good at giving myself self-care, & I don’t think I am alone in this. That’s why I created the Sunshine Box – to give people more self-care & joy. And that’s why I am loving these Aceology ice globe facial massagers. They are an easy way to give myself a little more self-care in my life.

Aceology creates vegan & cruelty-free products that help you take care of your skin. They make a variety of masks for all different benefits, including detoxification & skin illumination. And I can tell you first-hand, their facial massagers are so soothing & relaxing. They help to reduce face redness & puffiness, & they shrink your pores, which means less acne. They can also help with sinus, headaches, & muscle tension. Using these facial massagers literally brings a spa-like experience at home to you.

Starfish Project 14K Gold-Plated Bracelet

The last item in my box was a beautiful, gold-plated bracelet from the Starfish Project. The Starfish Project helps women who have been exploited and/or trafficked find freedom. Through vocational training, holistic care programs, & skill training, the Starfish Project gives these women the tools, skills & confidence they need to secure their independence. Additionally, all of the jewelry they make is quality-controlled, plated sustainably, & made by hand.

I love my new bracelet. It’s simple but elegant, a perfect piece to wear every day or for a fancy occasion. And every time I look at it, I think about the women this bracelet is helping, & it helps me to feel more empowered to take on my day as well.

A Final Note

Last but not least, I would like to touch briefly on the design of the box. Ashely Price, a Black female artist based in Houston, designed the beautiful art on the front of the box. Ashley left her corporate job seven years ago to create PinkLoMein. According to her website, Ashely says she is committed to reflecting “everyday people with a focus on women empowerment & positive affirmations” in her artwork. For the Be Kind box, Ashely said she wanted to represent “empowerment & simply feeling good about yourself.” The quotes in the women’s hair were meant to encourage recipients to be bold, brave, grateful, & most importantly, kind.

I absolutely loved my Be Kind box. It brightened my day when I received it in the mail, & the products I received have brightened every day since. If you are passionate about helping our planet & bettering the world around us, I strongly suggest subscribing to your own box. It’s good for you, & for the environment.

As I said in my unboxing video, take care of your body & take care of the earth: They are the only places you have to live.

Healthy recipes to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

Note: This post does contain affiliate links. If you buy a product after clicking a link, I may earn a commission off of that purchase.

St. Patrick’s Day is almost here!

Traditionally, this would be the time for sodium-rich corned beef & cabbage, carb-laden colcannon potatoes, artificially dyed green desserts (see a natural alternative here), & multiple pints of beer. And while this is a perfectly fine way to celebrate on occasion, if you are currently trying to tackle some health & fitness goals for summer, or if you are just looking to make some healthier meals for your family, this may not be the ideal choice.

If you are looking for some healthier but still festive alternatives, check out this round-up of delicious St. Patrick’s-themed recipes, so you can still have fun & feel good.

Breakfast

Green Eggs & Ham Mini Frittatas from Thoughts of a Crafty Mom

Photo from Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom

These mini frittatas are a delicious, high-protein, low-carb choice for breakfast. They are easy to make, & you can use different ingredients to customize them for the flavor you want.

Green Smoothie Bowl from Recipes from a Pantry

Photo from Recipes from a Pantry by Bintu

This vegan smoothie recipe uses matcha to get the desirable green color. Matcha has a number of health benefits – it’s a rich source of antioxidants, & it can promote good heart, brain & liver health. This smoothie recipe is also free of added sugars; it is sweetened with fruit & date syrup, one of my new favorite, natural sweeteners.

Kale Kefir Pancakes from Tin & Thyme

Photo from Tin & Thyme

Sneak some veggies into your breakfast with this Kale Kefir Pancake recipe. If you don’t have kefir, substitute buttermilk (you can make your own by adding 1 tbsp lemon juice or white vinegar to a cup of milk & letting it sit for 5 minutes). These pancakes are gluten-free as well – they use buckwheat flour & oats instead of all-purpose flour. This is a savory pancake recipe, but if you want something a little sweeter, take out the turmeric & add in some honey. Or, embrace the savory component & pair this recipe with salsa & eggs.

Lunch

Creamy Broccoli Soup from Hungry Healthy Happy

Photo from Hungry Healthy Happy

This soup is so indulgently creamy, but it’s packed with vegetables, making it a delicious but still nutritious choice for lunch. Enjoy it alone for a light meal, or pair it with a small salad and/or crusty bread for a more filling lunch.

St. Patrick’s Day Bento Box from Little Passports

Photo from Little Passports

This bento box is too cute, & it has all the healthy foods you need for a balanced meal, plus a fun little treat. Instead of using cream cheese, spread hummus between the spinach tortillas for a higher-protein choice.

Green St. Patrick’s Day Lunch from Stuffed Suitcase

Photo from Stuffed Suitcase

Pair lots of green foods together for an overwhelmingly Irish-themed meal. Dye a hard boiled egg green, serve it with green tortilla chips & guacamole for dipping, & add in some sliced green vegetables & kiwi for snacking.

Snacks

Shamrock Dippers with a Pot of Gold from Super Healthy Kids

This recipe uses real cheese to make the Pot of Gold dip, making it a much healthier choice than traditional queso from the store. The Shamrock Dippers are made from spinach tortillas, making it a simple but festive choice for chips.

St. Patrick’s Day Snack Board from Eating with Elaine

On most holidays, I find what people struggle most with is getting in enough fruits & vegetables. This snack board is absolutely adorable, & it’s packed with healthy fruits & veggies, so you can make sure you are getting in all your necessary servings for the day.

Avocado Deviled Eggs from Little Family Adventure

Instead of using mayonnaise & green food coloring, this deviled eggs recipe gets its creaminess & festive green color from avocados! It’s a recipe packed with protein & healthy fats.

Dinner

Pot o’ Gold Stuffed Peppers from Super Healthy Kids

The whole family is going to love this fun, festive dish. Yellow bell peppers are stuffed with ground turkey, brown rice, & tomatoes & topped with cheddar cheese to make the most delicious pot of gold you have ever seen!

Rainbow Bell Pepper Pizza from Super Healthy Kids

Rainbows are another theme of St. Patrick’s Day, & eating from the rainbow is another way to stay healthy. This Rainbow Bell Pepper Pizza is covered in vegetables, making it a delicious & nutritious choice for celebrating the holiday.

Easy Spinach Pesto from Super Healthy Kids

This pesto is made from fresh spinach, walnuts, & extra-virgin olive oil, making it a great choice of healthy fats & vegetables. Stir it into your favorite pasta (or zucchini pasta to keep the dish extra festive), add in some ground turkey for protein if you like, & pair it with your favorite crusty bread for a delicious meal.

Desserts

Chocolate Matcha Ice Cream Sandwiches from Nadia’s Healthy Kitchen

Photo from Nadia’s Healthy Kitchen

Matcha steals the show again in this delicious, raw & vegan ice cream sandwich recipe. The ice cream is made from coconut milk & sweetened with pure maple syrup, & the cookies are made from dates, cashews & cocoa powder, making it a delicious, lower-sugar recipe that everyone is sure to enjoy!

Keto St. Patrick’s Day Sugar Cookies from Veg Annie

Photo from Veg Annie

If you’re trying to keep your dessert low-carb, try these Keto sugar cookies. They are gluten-free & sweetened with sugar-free maple syrup. The green frosting is made from avocado, monk fruit sweetener, & butter. It’s a delicious, simple recipe that you can have fun making with the kids.

Mint Chocolate Chip Brownies from Bakerita

Photo from Bakerita

When I think of green desserts, I think of mint. These Mint Chocolate Chip Brownies are paleo & gluten-free, making them a healthy choice for anyone trying to stay away from processed foods. The layers of brownie, mint cream, & chocolate topping make this treat so indulgent, you won’t even miss the traditional sugar.

I hope you all have a fun & festive St. Patrick’s Day! Remember, if the diet breaks for one day, all progress is not lost. Have fun & get back on track tomorrow.

My yoga journey: The powerful lessons I learned on my mat

“Yoga is not about touching your toes. It is what you learn on the way down.”

Jigar Gor

Yoga, for me, has always been a place of learning. On the mat, I learn more about myself than I discover in most other places in my life. I learn of my strength, my will, and my perseverance. I learn about my abilities, my draw to flexibility (both in my life & on the mat), & my limitations. Most importantly, I learn more about who I am, & I learn to love that person more.

Yoga was not always a part of my life. I was not a flexible child. I could not touch my toes if I wanted to. And for a long time, as ironic as it may seem given my current profession as a holistic health practitioner and personal trainer, exercise was not something I normally engaged in nor enjoyed.

However, when I was 13 years old, I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia. This diagnosis came after months of widespread pain in my body to the point that it was difficult to get out of bed in the mornings. I was told then that yoga could help me, both in managing my physical pain & in managing my stress, which would, in turn, decrease the amount of pain I experienced.

At first, I was skeptical. Not only was I uninterested in yoga, but I had no confidence that I could do it. As many of my first-time students think, I thought I had to be flexible to do yoga. It never occurred to me that I had it the wrong way – I didn’t need to be flexible to do yoga; yoga would help me to become flexible.

And it helped me with that in more ways than one. When I finally rolled out the mat & slipped back into Downward Dog, I found that yoga was not just for the body; it is for the mind as well.

The yogic lifestyle began to drip into other parts of my life. As someone who was always easily stressed & angered, someone who lived by a rigid & unyielding schedule fueled by anxiety, yoga taught me patience & flexibility. When challenges came my way, I used the strength yoga had taught me as I held Plank Pose for minutes on end. When negative situations threatened my joy, I learned to flip them around & look at them differently, just as I viewed the world from Plow Pose with my feet sitting behind my head & my shoulders supporting my body instead. I learned to meditate on worries when needed, & to let meditation sweep the worries away when they no longer needed to concern my mind. And at the end of my practice, as I laid back during Savasana, I learned that it isn’t necessarily the work, but actually the rest & relaxation that can be the most important part of my life.

Yoga carried me through some of the most difficult moments in my life. It became a regular part of my daily routine. And I always felt better, mentally, physically & spiritually, when I stepped off my mat versus when I had stepped on.

As I got older, I discovered I wanted to share this joy with others, & so I was professionally trained in the art & began teaching my own classes. There is nothing more fulfilling to me than watching a student come into my class, their body held tight with stress, their mind clearly clouded with overwhelming thoughts, & then to watch them leave with a serene expression, their body loose & mind at ease. Through teaching yoga, I learned another important lesson – my life is meant for so much more than my own experiences. I was given a life to give to others.

Yoga is still teaching me every day. I have a stubborn mind, & I often have to be taught the same lessons again, but Yoga is patient with me, & it continues to teach me to have patience with myself. Yoga has helped me to love the body I have been given, to explore the depths of my mind & spirituality, to believe in my own abilities, & to have grace for myself when I fall. Even though I am a yoga teacher, I still often feel like I am the student in my practice, & this, too, has taught me an important lesson: humility, & in turn, compassion & empathy for others.

Yoga is a journey, filled with ups & downs, back-bending difficulties & relaxing tests of patience & flexibility. But, if you are willing to embark upon it, I promise you will discover so much more than you ever knew about the most important subject you have to learn about in this life: Your self.

Namaste.

The best yoga products to advance your practice

The view from my yoga mat

Note: This post contains affiliate links. If you purchase a product after clicking a link, I may earn a commission off of that purchase.

Students often ask me how they can get better at yoga. As a teacher of five years & a practicing yogi for a decade, my first answer is always practice. Almost no one stands perfectly on their shoulders or hands their first time – it takes practice, & quite a few falls, to get there. But the next thing I remind students is there are more tools they can use to enhance their practice than just a good yoga mat.

Whether you are a beginner looking to get more flexible, or a more advanced yogi looking for a challenge or a deeper stretch, these are some of my favorite products to enhance your practice & maybe give you a little motivation to try some new poses. For me, buying a new yoga product excites me to get back on my mat for a little while & play around. And even as a teacher, some of these products still challenge me no matter how much I use them.

Let’s start with the mat. Having a good mat is the first priority. Gaiam yoga mats are high-quality & durable, &, let’s face it, they are really pretty, too. No matter what your style is, you can find a Gaiam yoga mat that appeals to you. For ease of going to class, or for taking your mat with you to the beach or wherever you go, you can pair it with a bag – a lot of Gaiam bags have extra pockets to hold your phone, water bottle, or any extra gear you need.

And with that being said, let’s get into some of those extra gear options.

For the Flow

Gaiam block & strap combo

Yoga straps are extremely versatile. Whether you are looking to assist yourself into more complicated stretches, or if you want a deeper stretch in some basic poses, a strap can help you achieve that. You can buy straps that already have loops for you to stick your feet or hands into, or a more basic strap that you can loop yourself. I often teach students to use a strap the first time they are trying Standing Hand-to-Big-Toe Pose so they can reach for their toes without hunching over at their core (see an illustration here). You can also use a strap to pull your core closer to your legs to deepen the stretch during a Forward Bend (see more instructions on that here). You can watch my video on how to use a yoga strap here.

Yoga blocks serve the same purpose. You can make stretches easier & make sure you stay in good form by using your block to shorten your reach, such as during Triangle Pose, so you don’t hunch over in your core (see a video illustration here). Or, you can use the block to deepen your stretches, such as placing it beneath your feet during a Seated Forward Bend & reaching for the end of the block, rather than just for your toes (see how to do it here). You can watch my yoga block routine video here.

A yoga wheel is perfect for the yogi looking to take their practice to the next level. I don’t care how often you practice with a yoga wheel – it never gets easier. It challenges your balance even more than your usual yoga practice, & there are poses you can do with the wheel to increase flexibility as well, such as Bridge Pose with a wheel. If you have Plank Pose down, I challenge you to place your feet on a yoga wheel & try again. You will feel your abs working like you never have before. I will be releasing a video on how to use a yoga wheel this Monday, so stay tuned on my holistic health Instagram page, Evolve.

For Savasana

One of the most important parts of yoga is actually during savasana – the cool down period when you lie back on your mat & let your mind & body relax. For many people, this meditative portion of yoga can be the most challenging. Completely quieting our bodies & minds is never easy. Luckily, there are some products that can help assist us into that elusive meditative state.

First, try some essential oils. Relaxing scents such as lavender & chamomile can help you to reach a more restful state. You can put them in a carrier oil & rub them in your skin, or diffuse them.

Our physical state can distract us from meditation as well. One of the reasons we do yoga is to stretch & relax our muscles so there won’t be any aches, pains or discomforts to distract us during savasana. But, if you’re anything like me, there is another distraction that shows up halfway through savasana – temperature. I’m warm at the end of my yoga practice, but it only takes a few minutes of lying still for my body temperature to drop. If this sounds like you, consider using a yoga blanket or wrap. It will help you to stay in that meditative state when the chills come, rather than becoming distracted just as you were starting to slip away.

Mala beads are another great way to stay focused. If you are familiar with praying a rosary, they work something like that. As you repeat mantras, you move your fingers from one bead to the next to keep track. When you have gone all the way around the string of beads, you are done with your practice. This can be a great tool for someone who is just starting their meditation practice. Rather than trying to clear your head of everything, keeping your mind focused on one thing can be an easier & still useful form of meditation.

Some days, you just can’t get into the meditative state. It happens to us all. When all else fails, I use this acupressure mat & pillow. Sometimes it relaxes me enough to meditate, but normally it just provides a new form of relaxation & gives my body a little extra love so I still get something beneficial out of my savasana period.

For the Traveling Yogi

Me during 4K for Cancer doing tree pose in Nevada

The beauty of yoga is that it can be done anywhere. As I said, one of the greatest ways to enhance your practice is to practice more, & that means consistency is important. If you’re often on the road, consider using one of these products to keep up with your practice.

First, yoga socks & gloves. When I don’t feel like toting around my yoga mat, I use these. It’s no fun slipping & sliding on a floor while you try to hold Downward Dog. These socks & gloves keep you in a stable position as if you were on a mat. They are also a great choice if you happen to be doing yoga in a cold environment.

And, whether you are traveling or not, I definitely recommend this mat wash to keep all of your gear clean. It’s all organic, & the gentle solution won’t harm your mat. It removes sweat, dirt, germs, & anything else you don’t want sinking into your pores during your practice.

Me in Lotus Pose – Photo by Joseph Mauler

So, there you have it – there are all my favorite items to use to advance your yoga practice, no matter where you are or at what your level is. Yoga is for everyone, & with the right tools & a mat with a design that makes you smile, it may just become one of your favorite ways to show your mind & body some love.

Namaste.
